Edgebander Buying Guide for Cabinet Shops

EVA vs PUR vs laser edgebanding β€” technology comparison and brand selection guide.

Edge quality is visible on every finished product. A poor edgebanding result β€” visible glue lines, lifting edges, inconsistent tape tracking β€” undermines otherwise good cabinet work. An edgebander is typically a cabinet shop's second-highest capital investment after a CNC.

EVA vs PUR vs laser

EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) is the traditional glue used in edgebanders. It produces a visible glue line and has limited heat resistance. PUR (polyurethane reactive) adhesive produces a thinner, stronger bond with better heat resistance and a nearly invisible glue line. Laser and hotair zero-joint technology melts an adhesive layer pre-applied to the tape, producing truly invisible joins β€” at a significant price premium.

Entry vs mid vs high-end

Entry-level machines (Felder, Holz-Her base models, Hammer) suit workshops doing lower volumes with simpler edge profiles. Mid-range machines (SCM Olimpic, HOMAG Ambition, Biesse Akron mid-series) add PUR capability, better tracking and reliability at production volumes. High-end machines (HOMAG Edgeteq, Biesse Akron 1100) add laser zero-joint capability, automated panel return systems and Industry 4.0 connectivity.

What to spend

An entry capable PUR edgebander costs A$25,000–50,000. Mid-range with good PUR and scraping is A$60,000–120,000. Laser/zero-joint capable machines start around A$150,000–250,000. For most residential cabinet shops, a reliable PUR machine in the A$60,000–90,000 range covers the quality requirement without the premium for laser.

Service and consumables

Edgebanders are high-maintenance machines β€” glue pots, scrapers, trimming units and tracking all require regular attention. Choose a brand with a local service technician, not just a distributor. Ask about average call-out response time in your city.
